60 Year Anniversary

Celebrating 60 Years of Great Broadcasting

60 Years of great broadcasting

We’re celebrating our 60th anniversary at San Diego 6 and we want you to be a part of it! If you have any memories of growing up with San Diego 6, we’d love to share them on air–memories of favorite shows, personal experiences, or even special photographs. You can send them to 60years@SanDiego6.com

XETV has been on the air for 60 years. That’s 420 dog years. Did you know that we were the second TV station on the air here? Channel 8 was first in 1949, and XETV came next in April 1953. When we went on the air, San Diego County’s population was around 700,000. The Padres were a minor league team playing at Lane Field at the foot of Broadway. Mission Bay was transforming from swampland and Mission Valley had more cows than people. If you grew up in San Diego, you grew up with Channel 6.

As you can imagine, these last 60 years have created an amazing amount of memories. We are now in the process of collecting them, and you can see what we have so far on these pages. We’ll be collecting pictures all through 2013, so check back often to see new ones. Also be watching, as we re-tell some of the best stories on our air. Of course, 60 years creates a lot of programming memories too, so look for some shows out of our past during special programming marathons this Spring.   If you want to learn more about the history of Channel 6, visit our “About Us”.
